Embarking on an Erasmus journey is a transformative experience that opens doors to new opportunities, personal growth, and cultural immersion. As someone who has recently had the privilege of participating in an Erasmus program, I can attest to the life-changing lessons and invaluable memories that this experience offers. My recent experience, Antalya – Türkiye, was an amazing one because my role there was to teach English. This mobility was part of the Erasmus+ project, first year, E-Digital Academy, number: 2022-1-RO01-KA121-SCH-000053843 and the host school was Sule Muzaffer Buyuk Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi, Manavgat, Türkiye. In this article, I will share the profound insights I gained during my Erasmus adventure and how it has shaped my perspective on the world. From the importance of embracing uncertainty to the joys of discovering oneself through diverse cultures, here are the key lessons that Erasmus experience has taught me.
During the aforementioned mobility I taught some English lessons to students from grades 9-12. The lessons were designed mainly on developing speaking skills but some vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening exercises were also included. The focus was on getting to know each other better, finding similarities and differences between our educational system, teaching methods and culture. I am happy to have met students eager to find out more, to learn better and to participate actively in the lessons I provided.
I have improved my skills regarding working with students from different backgrounds, with different levels of English. I am more aware of the differences between our cultures, our educational systems. I used various methods and teaching techniques, including digital ones, in order to make my lessons worthy and to accomplish the objectives I had had.
Before immersing yourself in a new country and culture, it is crucial to clear your mind of preconceived notions and stereotypes. Erasmus experiences teach us the importance of approaching unfamiliar territories with an open heart and an open mind. By shedding prejudices, we allow ourselves to truly embrace the beauty and diversity of different cultures. It is through this lens of acceptance that we can form meaningful connections and develop a deeper understanding of the world around us.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my Erasmus experiences is to avoid judging people based solely on appearances. In a world that often relies on first impressions, Erasmus teaches us that true connections go beyond surface-level judgments. By casting aside assumptions and taking the time to understand others on a deeper level, we unlock the potential for profound friendships and enriching exchanges of ideas.
Erasmus experiences encourage us to embrace our individuality and challenge the status quo. It is easy to fall into the trap of conforming to popular opinions or societal norms. However, by daring to think differently, we can carve our own path and make a unique impact on the world. The Erasmus community celebrates diversity of thought, encouraging us to question, explore, and redefine our perspectives.
In the midst of bustling schedules and academic commitments, it is essential to pause and savour every moment of your Erasmus journey. These experiences are fleeting, and the memories created are irreplaceable. We had the chance to explore not only the city where we were accommodated, Manavgat, but also Side and Antalya. Whether it was exploring a new city, bonding with fellow exchange students, or immersing ourselves in local traditions, we cherished each moment and allowed ourselves to fully experience the magic of the surroundings.
Perhaps one of the most profound aspects of Erasmus experiences is the opportunity to rediscover oneself through exposure to diverse cultures. I discovered hidden passions, unexpected joys, and a deeper understanding of my own identity. Each experience allowed me to unearth new facets of my personality and deepen my self-awareness.
