As a foreign language teacher, one of my favourite online tools is Vocaroo, a free online voice recording service used by teachers and students around the world with very high intensity especially during lockdown periods. But why do I like Vocaroo? Because there are so many things we can do with this great handy tool.
Technology has promoted the evolution of edutainment, therefore teachers can use a lot of edutainment materials in order to compete with all media distractions for students’ time and attention, and they can actually use technology to make their work better. Educational games are designed to teach students about certain subjects, to help them acquire certain skills while playing and to reinforce students’ development such as board games, card games, video games, films, art, drama documentaries, music, language games etc. They are considered to belong to the field of edutainment, a new term related to games that has been introduced along the years.
Young children remember words more easily if they learn them by drawing, colouring or by making things. One of the advantages of learning vocabulary through drawing is that creative activities help young learners: develop language skills in a stress-free, natural way; use meaningful language to them; test their skills in a fun, interesting way.
It is generally accepted that information and communication technology (ICT) is an integral part of today’s world. Language education is a domain where open-access resources, online courses, virtual classrooms, and social networks based on information and communication technology (ICT) are being increasingly used to provide learners access to information, promote interaction, improve communicative skills and enhance digital literacy skills. However, within the rapid growth of technology, online resources and tools present both opportunities and challenges. Therefore, to obtain the maximum potential of ICT in language teaching, it is vital to be used in a pedagogically sound way that corresponds to the individual needs of the learners.
According to J. Scrievener, 2005, the modern teacher’s main role is to help students learn, by enabling them to work at their own pace, by giving short explanations and by encouraging them to actively participate, talk, interact and do things, during lessons. So, students are the most active in this process and they explore, try out, make learning interesting, with the help of their teacher. The development of society, over the past decades, has had a strong influence on teaching methods, which have changed, in order to reflect a better understanding of the children’s psychology, while dealing with and accepting the technological discoveries.
I have been teaching English for 18 years now and I have been involved in a lot of extracurricular activities for more than 10 years. At first, I was not sure of their benefit and I was convinced that there were no real results. Then, I got the chance to organize different workshops in school and I saw the students’ enthusiasm and their eagerness to do something different.
