Upgrade Your High School Students’ Well-being

Attaining a state of well-being among students requires a proactive, multi-layered approach that blends emotional safety, mental health literacy, and practical classroom strategies. It is a fact that nowadays the global trend of prioritizing student well-being shifts education from purely academic achievements to holistic human development. The question is how teachers can promote well-being among students to create a safe, connected environment in which they feel supported in both their mental and academic growth.

In the following paragraphs I am going to display 5 techniques that could easily help attaining well-being state among students, engaging them in the real world, a world in which social-emotional learning, mental health literacy, mindfulness, stress management and healthy choices represent core wellbeing competencies. I believe the aspects listed above can be taken into consideration with positive results since students appreciate activities aimed at a healthy environment.

1. Teach “well-being” concept

Make students aware of The 5 C’s of well-being; Competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring, which come from positive psychology and youth development research. Work with classical/online dictionaries, encourage research on the concept and create your well-being classroom dictionary using digital skills. The more you are going to use the concept, the more they are going to embark on the journey of wellbeing. Dealing with vocabulary input, reflections, discussions on physical, emotional, social or digital wellbeing can ease the path to master personal wellbeing long term-competencies.

2. Use/Create inspirational quotes

Using inspirational quotes can boost student morale, reduce stress, and foster a growth mindset when applied with care. Focusing on effort over perfection, encouraging self-compassion, avoiding toxic positivity might result in a great classroom environment. Imagine the impact of the visionary teacher Renee Peterson Trudeau at 8:00 o’clock in the morning: „Nurturing yourself is not selfish, it’s essential to your survival and well-being.” Additionally, creating quotes together in the classroom builds a shared community, sparks deep discussions, and gives students a valued voice. For instance, starting from Trudeau’s quote, students can create their own quotes: “Do not negotiate your WELLBEING!” or “Nurture your future”.

3. Let them choose

Choosing assignments, topics for different projects, apps or even a destination for the next trip can make all the difference. Learner involvement and motivation may be increased by encouraging students to contribute ideas for homework and possibly design their own tasks. Thus, classroom well-being involves creating an atmosphere where students’ basic psychological needs are met. When safety, belonging, competence, and autonomy are present, students can engage more fully with learning activities and develop the resilience needed to overcome challenges.

4. Decide together

Deciding together on the movie they are going to watch, the song they are going to listen to, the poem they are going to memorize or the game they are going to play/create could be vital in building their wholeness state. With simple instructions in which you set rules in terms of language and school-appropriate standard, collaborative selection boosts student engagement, investment, and critical thinking.

5. Facilitate meetings with professionals

Another extraordinary technique of making students aware of the importance of wellbeing is to open the door for specialists. Research consistently shows that facilitating meetings with professionals helps students understand wellbeing by connecting classroom lessons to real-world experiences and expert advice. Mental health therapists, health and life coaches, physical trainers, or academic researchers should be constantly present inside or outside the classroom. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach involving various school professionals is essential for holistic student growth.

On a final note, by prioritizing well-being, a teacher creates optimal conditions for academic success while supporting students’ overall development. It is not easy because building a well-being-focused classroom is an ongoing journey that requires intention and consistent effort. Undoubtedly, by implementing these strategies, teachers can develop learning environments where both students and educators thrive. Either you promote wellbeing among your students, or you tend to implement relevant techniques during your activities, focus on making your students feel the wellbeing.
