The Role of Technology in Teaching English as a Second Language

In recent decades, technology has significantly transformed the educational landscape, particularly in English Language Teaching (ELT). This paper examines the pedagogical impact of digital tools, focusing on both their benefits and limitations, as well as on the evolving role of teachers in technology-enhanced environments.

The rapid development of digital technologies has reshaped traditional approaches to teaching and learning. In ELT, technology enables access to authentic materials, fosters learner autonomy, and supports interactive learning environments. However, its integration also raises important pedagogical challenges.

Digital tools increase student motivation by transforming learning into an interactive experience. Gamification, multimedia content, and instant feedback contribute to higher levels of engagement and participation.

The integration of platforms such as Quizizz, InVideo, Kahoot!, Gamma, and Genially has redefined instructional practices in ELT.

From a pedagogical perspective, these tools offer significant advantages. Quiz-based platforms such as Quizizz and Kahoot! facilitate formative assessment and provide immediate feedback, which is essential for effective learning. Visual and interactive tools like Genially and Gamma enhance content delivery and support different learning styles. Similarly, InVideo allows teachers to integrate audiovisual materials, contributing to the development of listening comprehension and multimodal literacy.

However, a critical analysis reveals several limitations. First, the gamified nature of some platforms may shift the focus from deep learning to superficial engagement. Students may prioritize speed and competition over accuracy and understanding. Second, the successful implementation of these tools requires a high level of digital competence, which not all teachers possess. Third, technical constraints—such as limited access to devices or unstable internet connections—can create inequalities among learners. Finally, excessive reliance on digital tools may reduce meaningful face-to-face interaction, which remains fundamental for developing communicative competence.

Therefore, while these platforms are valuable educational resources, their use must be pedagogically justified and carefully balanced.

Technology enables real-time communication through video conferencing and messaging tools, allowing learners to interact with speakers worldwide. This contributes to improved fluency and confidence.

Adaptive technologies allow for individualized learning experiences, helping students progress according to their needs and abilities.

In a digital context, teachers act as facilitators and guides. Their role is to select appropriate tools, design meaningful activities, and ensure that technology supports, rather than replaces, pedagogy.

As a teacher, one can find advantages, but also challenges, to using technology during ESL classes. Among the advantages, we can mention: access to authentic materials, increased motivation and engagement, flexible learning environments, and opportunities for global interaction. Some of the challenges one may face include: risk of distraction, digital inequality, need for teacher training, and reduced direct interaction.

Technology plays a crucial role in modern ELT, offering innovative solutions for teaching and learning. Nevertheless, its effectiveness depends on thoughtful integration and pedagogical awareness. A balanced approach remains essential.
