All around the world, students of all ages are learning to speak English, bur their reasons for wanting to study English can differ greatly. Some students, of course, learn English because it is on the curriculum, but for others, studying a language reflects some kind of a choice.
In fact, in today’s world speaking English has become a necessity. It is not only that but today’s generation looks down upon anyone who is unable to speak English. It has become more like a status symbol. All the companies are recruiting only those people who speak fluent and correct English.
Adults make a choice to study English, they may do it for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they want to travel, perhaps they want to use social media, perhaps they want to get involved in online gaming or perhaps they are going to live in an English speaking country.
Many people learn English because they think it will be useful in some way for international communication and travel. Such students often do not have a particular reason for going to English classes, but simply wish to learn to speak the language effectively for wherever and whenever this might be useful for them.
The purposes students have for learning will have an effect on what it is they want and need to learn, and as a result will influence what they are taught.
A variety of factors can create a desire to learn. Perhaps the learners love the subject they have chosen , or maybe they are simply interested in seeing what it is like. The desire to achieve some goal is the bedrock of motivation and, if it is strong enough , it provokes a decision to act.
Some students think that it is enough to watch movies and listen to music, but this is not the case, in order to become good English speakers, it is necessary to be exposed to as many sources as possible.
One of the teacher’s main aims should be to help students to sustain their motivation. But however much we do to foster and sustain students motivation, we can only, in the end, encourage by word and deed, offering our support and guidance. Real motivation comes from within each individual, from the students themselves.
