After using the Mentimeter platform in the classroom for two weeks, I noticed a visible increase in student engagement and retention throughout the lesson. Mentimeter can also be used outside of the class for preparing the lesson or for feedback afterwards. If you want students to use a poll outside of class, it is better to use a link or QR code, which can be found by clicking on ‘Share’ at the top right of the screen. Asynchronous polls are recommended if the teachers want students to reflect on the lesson before giving their feedback, or if their purpose is to gather some data in advance to look at in class. To do this, they will change the poll to ‘Audience Pace’ using the ‘Configure’ option in the top bar. In an asynchronous poll, students will not generally see the poll results until they have voted. The teachers can restrict this further; under ‘Share’ in the menu on the top right-hand side of the screen, where they have the option to choose who can see the results. Mentimeter’s free Q&A platform encourages participants to ask anonymous, real-time questions without interrupting. The Q&A feature is useful in small groups, especially when discussing sensitive topics. By asking students to pose live questions anonymously, the teacher will create a more open and safe environment.
