Getting Real-Time Visual Feedback from Students with Mentimeter

Mentimeter (or Menti for short) is a Swedish company based in Stockholm that develops and maintains an app for creating presentations with real-time visual feedback. Mentimeter enterprise is one of the safest and securest ways to unlock impactful engagement. Mentimeter is an entirely online interactive presentation platform that uses Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), i.e. participants can access it from their mobile phones or tablets – there is no need for extra pieces of hardware. The instructions for participants can be found at the top of each slide.

The users go to www.menti.com and type in the code (note: www.mentimeter.com is for creating presentations, www.menti.com is for responding to them). Codes are automatically generated and change every few days but this doesn’t affect the presentation or the results.

The app enables users to share knowledge and real-time feedback on mobile with presentations, polls or brainstorming sessions in classes, trainings, workshops, meetings, boardrooms, conferences and other group activities. 76% of people believe meetings are better with polls and anonymous tools. Using Mentimeter in real time during a lesson, lecture or workshop is a very smooth experience, with results instantly feeding in and appearing on the presenter’s screen in whatever format you have chosen.  This could be a scrolling list of open text responses, multiple choice answers as a bar or pie chart, or a word cloud. The students can generate a free word cloud quickly and easily and watch vibrant words appear in real-time.

The app also focuses on online collaboration for the education sector, allowing students to answer questions anonymously. Anonymous questions mean your audience won’t be afraid to ask and engage. Mentimeter ensures all voices are heard, even those who might not usually speak up. The presentations can be made in seconds from a template or from scratch by adding interactive slides. Simply add a prompt and let our free AI slide maker instantly draft an interactive presentation. When presenting, the students can easily join your presentation at Menti.com by entering the presentation’s unique code. More than that, you can track how your audience reacted to your presentation, with slide-by-slide details after the presentation. This means easy access to valuable insights about the questions.

Mentimeter helps to facilitate student-centred learning and create a fascinating environment for active learning and a dynamic learning experience in physical classrooms or online. Its features are perfect for engaging any audience. If you want to boost your students’ activity, anonymous responses will let everyone participate confidently. Engaged teams perform even better. Interactive slides provide the perfect platform for consistent engagement throughout the lesson. They maintain engagement in sessions and provide an equal opportunity for participation. Mentimeter encourages participation and gives everyone equal chances to share their opinion in a safe space. It can be used for gauging understanding, sparking discussion or running quizzes.Integrating Mentimeter into our teaching process (at any stage) can transform a traditional lesson into a dynamic and participatory experience, providing opportunities for active engagement of all students, including those with disabilities or those who struggle with understanding extended verbal content or with attention span issues. The visual and interactive approaches offered by Mentimeter are particularly beneficial. The concise format of the questions, the ability to use images and icons, and the immediate visual feedback can facilitate comprehension and maintain motivation. Mentimeter creates interactive moments that enhance retention and inclusivity in diverse learning settings. As an online polling tool, Mentimeter can be used even if students are not in the same physical space. In fact, for distance learners, it can be helpful for them to interact with others on the course in this way.

After using the Mentimeter platform in the classroom for two weeks, I noticed a visible increase in student engagement and retention throughout the lesson. Mentimeter contributed to more interesting, fun and energising learning. At the same time, teacher-student interaction was facilitated, with interactive questions allowing students to interact with teachers and peers. Mentimeter fun interactive quizzes created an inclusive environment where every student could participate, regardless of their abilities, confidence level or anything that prevents them from answering vocally. The app had positive impact on learning by improving the learning process and academic results.

Mentimeter allows the teacher to design a wide variety of interactive polls. Polling students can be the most effective way to increase engagement and make a presentation dynamic and memorable. The teacher can collect insights in one place and use their input to make better decisions. During a presentation, the slide will by default have a 5 or 6-digit code at the top for students to access the poll on their device. This code is best used for synchronous polling, as it will expire after two days. In the classroom, the teacher may want to control when the results of a poll are made visible. It depends on whether we want learners to answer without being influenced by others or if we are looking for them to be inspired by their peers’ ideas. For example, a multiple-choice question where the results appear instantly on the screen may encourage students to vote for the most popular option, rather than for the one they think is correct. The teacher can choose to show or hide results for individual slides under the ‘Customise’ tab.

Mentimeter can also be used outside of the class for preparing the lesson or for feedback afterwards. If you want students to use a poll outside of class, it is better to use a link or QR code, which can be found by clicking on ‘Share’ at the top right of the screen. Asynchronous polls are recommended if the teachers want students to reflect on the lesson before giving their feedback, or if their purpose is to gather some data in advance to look at in class. To do this, they will change the poll to ‘Audience Pace’ using the ‘Configure’ option in the top bar. In an asynchronous poll, students will not generally see the poll results until they have voted. The teachers can restrict this further; under ‘Share’ in the menu on the top right-hand side of the screen, where they have the option to choose who can see the results. Mentimeter’s free Q&A platform encourages participants to ask anonymous, real-time questions without interrupting. The Q&A feature is useful in small groups, especially when discussing sensitive topics. By asking students to pose live questions anonymously, the teacher will create a more open and safe environment.

A word cloud generator, an interactive poll and quiz maker, Mentimeter is a digital tool that allows users to create an engaging learning environment and gather instant feedback by adopting a holistic approach to education. It is very easy to use and helps teachers be more flexible in their teaching. They can adapt educational materials based on the information provided by students, improving the content and adapting it to the diverse needs of their learners.
